You can rebuild your brain.

Trauma is a syndrome resulting from exposure to real or threatened serious injury or sexual assault. The signs and symptoms of trauma appear to arise from complex interactions of psychological and neurobiological factors. Studies have found alterations in various parts of the brain including; the amygdala, prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and anterior cingulate, and corpus collosum as well as altered functioning of the hypothalamic pituitary axis (HPA).

A wide variety of symptoms may be signs that you are experiencing posttraumatic stress disorder. The following are some of the most common symptoms of Trauma that you or those around you may have noticed:

  • Feeling upset by things that remind you of what happened
  • Having nightmares, vivid memories, or flashbacks of the event that make you feel like it’s happening all over again
  • Feeling emotionally cut off from others
  • Feeling numb or loss of interest in things you used to care about
  • Feeling constantly on guard
  • Feeling irritable or having anger
  • Difficulty with sleep
  • Problems with concentration
  • Easily startled or jumpy

It’s not just the symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder but also how you may react to them that can disrupt your life. You may:

  • Frequently avoid places or things that remind you of what happened.
  • Substance use to numb your feelings.
  • Thinking about self-injury or harming others.
  • Working all the time to occupy your mind.
  • Isolate from family and friends.

Traditional treatments for Trauma include antidepressants, antianxiety medication, sometimes antipsychotic medications, and various forms of talk therapy. These therapies are at least somewhat effective in 60% of Trauma sufferers. If you are not among the lucky ones…
